Carpe diem et fugere urbem is an expression used in Latin. We all know that carpe diem means “enjoy the day”. Yet the most important part of the sentence is its less widely known second half, for it explains how to do it: “Flee the city”.
This expression shows us that even during antiquity, urban chaos could be exhausting for the individual from time to time. But it also has a nourishing, refreshing, intriguing and activating side to it. The city’s colors, sounds, texture and motion are too multilayered and rich to be understood at first sight. To be able to fully feel the city, one should submit to its flow, inhale it, participate in it, or simply give in to it. Only for those who are able to do so, it turns into one of the most enjoyable treasures to discover. And then the tired but happy Roman spills out a wholly different expression:
“Carpe urbem!” or “Enjoy the city!”
With its complex structure constantly stimulating creativity, the city is also a unique source of inspiration for the artists. “Carpe Urbem I: City and Life” brings together six contemporary artists born in Izmir at Bonvivant, a venue symbolizing the concept of living well in the city. The various technical and thematic approaches featured in the exhibition unify around the concept of the city, illustrating the multilayered character of its relationship to both nature and human. This way, it also underlines the depth of the bond between Bonvivant and the city it is part of.
