Karmaşık sayılar mühendislikten bilgisayar bilimine, Kuantum fiziğinden fraktallara birçok alanda kullanılır; a+bi şeklinde gösterilebilen kısmen reel, kısmen sanal sayılardır.

Complex numbers are used in a variety of fields ranging from engineering to computer science, from Quantum physics to fractals; they are numbers with both real and imaginary components that can be represented as a+bi. As no real number has a negative square, the number i that fulfils the equation x2=−1 is considered to be virtual (imaginary). Thus, the polynomial equations featuring complex numbers yield more than one solution, and their geometry is studied in the complex plane known as the “Argand plane” or the “z plane”. A number’s real component is represented on the horizontal axis, whereas its imaginary part is represented on the vertical axis; the equation’s solution set, on the other hand, gives rise to a sphere.
Departing from the idea that the very act of observation affects the thing observed, some thinkers argue that the development of Postmodernism, especially in literature, is a result of Quantum physics. Our perception of reality transformed by Postmodernity finds its purest expression on the complex plane, where every question has more than one answer, and every effect has more than one cause. An infinite number of layers from the past and the future intertwine and amalgamate in one single point, under one variable i. As the digital revolution of zeroes and ones is waiting for the Quantum computer’s counterrevolution, the only reality that the individual lost in the sea of probabilities can hold on to is the impossibility of reaching a single notion of reality.
Works in the exhibition study the idea of complex plane using techniques such as painting, sculpture and photography instead of the digital technologies we often tend to associate it with. Ahmet Duru embarks on an experiment to distil landscape and capture its essence. While Aslı Aydemir transfers a traditional material like cintemani into the universe of probabilities, Deniz Defne Acerol welcomes us into her characters’ intersecting journeys, each awaiting the next act of their destiny. The viewer is left in a suspense in Gamze Zorlu’s collage-places, in Görkem Dikel’s shopping-mania extending to an infinite number of planes, and Gözde Başkent’s “Fight or Flight” scene. While Kerem Ağralı combines various conceptual references in one surreal environment, Melike Kılıç behaves like an alchemist, rendering the multi-layered nature of her narrative visible. Şener Yılmaz Aslan transforms our city’s eclectic texture into a mirror that pushes us to face our lack of identity. Consequently, the viewer is encouraged to look at his or her surrounding reality from a more critical perspective.
